How to be really, really happy

So many of us spend our lives chasing after everything we think is going to make us happy.  Whether that’s money, love, good health, friendship, successful career – none of it has the power to make us happy.

That’s not to say that those things can’t contribute good things to our lives . . . but can they make us HAPPY?

What is happiness, anyway?

Most of us would probably define it differently.  My definition would be a sense of contentment and satisfaction.  Based on that definition, am I happy?  Yes.  Are there still things I’m NOT satisfied with and want to change or improve in some way?  Absolutely!

:-)

But my sense of happiness doesn’t have to be dependent upon those things happening.  I think that’s where so many of us go wrong.  We don’t allow ourselves to feel happy unless everything is perfect.

We forget that our very lives are constantly in a state of flux.  We’re not meant to stay in one place forever.  Our surroundings aren’t meant to stay static.  We will never reach a state of completion with our lives until we stop living.

The older I get, the more strongly I become aware that happiness is just a choice I make moment to moment.  It’s a state of mind and heart.  It’s that inner “hum” of contentment that says all is well in my world right now.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t negative things I could choose to focus on in any given moment – lordy I always have plenty of those lurking nearby.  But I don’t have to give them any more of my time and attention than necessary.

Sometimes it’s easy to trick ourselves into believing that obsessing over problems is a good way to change them.

;-)

It never works.

So – back to the title of this post, how can we be really, really happy?  Choose it.  Yeah, I know how impossible that seems sometimes.  That’s why I decided to create this blog, to share tips and ideas to help you create the happy life you deserve.

In the meantime, start practicing feeling happy.  Even if things in your life are topsy-turvy right now, decide to feel happy anyway.  Maybe just for 30 seconds.  Or a minute or two.  Or ten minutes.  It gets easier the more you do it, I promise.

Stay tuned for a lot more tips and inspiration to help you feel happier and happier as the days go on.

:-)
